An Experiment

As attested before in this blog, I am a big believer in experimentation.  Thus I would like to try something different.  Most of the people I meet are usually pre-qualified by somebody else (lawyers, entreprenuers I have backed, other venture capitalists, etc.).  Now I know I don't get the traffic of a Jeff Nolan or a Brad Feld but looking at our logs, we do get a decent amount of people subscribing to this feed so here is the idea:

Every month I am going to keep two lunch spots open and I would like to invite folks reading this blog to send me an email or refer someone to me who I should lunch with during those spots.  I am looking to meet the following types of folks:

  1. Operating folks at big companies since I always enjoy hearing about what's going on at the ground level at big companies
  2. Technical folks working on interesting hard problems.  Not interested necessarily in new companies but just anyone working on hard problems
  3. MBA students or folks who are looking to go into high technology or VC

In return for spending that hour with me, I will provide for lunch (we usually have something decent here) and try to be a good listener.

Game?  Since we are starting this experiment in the middle of a month, we will only have one spot this month and that spot is on April 21st, 12:00 PM in our offices.  Send your emails to venky at globespancapital dot com and cc lynne at globespancapital dot com and we will get back to you shortly.

Update1: Thanks to a comment from the man up in the frozen north (see comments), I am clarifying a couple of things:

  1. Lunch will have to be in Palo Alto I am afraid so this is indeed limited to people in the Bay area or people visiting the Bay area
  2. I just threw up a profile of people I am interested in meeting but this is not meant to be a limiting criteria.  I love meeting interesting people i.e. "interesting" defined as doing something different, unique or away from the norm.  So if you are an conceptual artist or a go-go dancer I am still very interested in meeting you.

Aren't you limiting yourself a little?

In your shoes, I'd be looking to have lunch with really smart people you'd never encounter during the normal course of business. I imagine you've met quite a few operating execs, technical geniuses, and MBAs.

What about the computer artist, the successful entrepeneur who never took VC money, or the guy developing new uses for structural concrete? The further you step outside your comfort zone, the more likely you are to learn something new.

P.S. You probably meant to mention this, so I will: lunch is at your office in Palo Alto, so this offer only applies to people in or planning to visit the Bay Area.

You might also want to meet people when you are travelling...this way you are not limiting yourself to only bayarea people.

Uday.

How did lunch go? (found your post after googling for info on Andy.
